2-- Because believers in some distant, western countries must necessarily coexist and deal with the peoples of those countries – with their various religions, the predominance of weak religious values, and being busy trying to develop material gains – they must take their precautions for themselves and pay attention to specify times and places to meet one another and revive the tenets of their faith. They should nominate individuals to teach the ignorant amongst them, to guide the misguided amongst them, and to convince those who depart (from the correct faith) through the use of clear evidence and the honorable religious legal rulings. (All of that should be done) in order to bring down (the hurdles of) hardship, such that the faith becomes their friend in their (environment which is) foreign (to the faith). If they do not do this, there is a fear that they may dissolve in the midst of such societies. Their religious spirit may be lost. Following one’s whims, as well as ignorance, may dominate. Consequently, this will lead to the birth of generations amongst them who are distant from religious values. They will lose themselves, and their families and relatives along with them.

3-- In order to avoid such ills, one can found centers for intellectual thought and hold religious sermons. The language of the modern times should be taken into account. Hence, the positives and negatives of western social contract should be pointed out. These should be distinguished from the nature of the religious concepts. The consequences of the negatives and cons of such societies, as well as the fraud of their short-term benefits, should be explained. For it is certain that the more a human being depends on civil society and personal abilities, without connecting to God through worship or remembrance which manifests in action, the more aspects of error become apparent due to this overindulgence. This is sure to reflect upon those societies. If this were to be analyzed and its consequences were to be presented properly, on the one hand, and if the instincts regarding the need for the Absolute Creator – the One toward whom all souls direct themselves – were to be awakened, on the other hand; and if this all were to be coupled with clear-cut proof that the Islamic faith is the truth, this would yield a secure perimeter for the Muslim youth. For others, it would also be a deep signifier indicating the correctness and authenticity of our beliefs.
It is also no secret that reviving the commemoration rituals of Imam Husain (pbuh) has a role in the conscience and depth of the Islamic cause, generally, in the hearts of people and specifically in the school of Ahl-ul-Bayt (peace be upon them) as well. Indeed, generally, societies empathize with the ideals and values which are embodied in the struggle of individuals. In the moments of a human’s interaction with the lofty values manifested in certain stands and actions, the darkness of concepts gained unwillingly or unconsciously due to indulging in a particular way of life is removed from one’s self. This shaking within the souls is a result of the ring (sounded) by the tragedy of the Master of Martyrs, with all of its authentic factors (at play). From the side of Imam Husain and his family (peace be upon them) to what they faced from his enemies who claimed to follow his faith. This will remove those souls from the cloak of plunging to obey evil, such as hoarding, greed, and love of debasing desires, and drag them compellingly to stand in line with the call of humanity’s innate nature. (The call will have them) join up with the caravan of virtue, honor, and lofty meanings with Imam Husain (peace be upon him) and his companions. After which, a human being would not accept for him/herself a surface-level faith which is polluted with sins and faults.

It should be noted that reviving the commemoration rituals of Imam Husain (peace be upon him) is the best guarantee for raising the young generation with religious values and virtues. That is because these (rituals) include practices beloved to their souls. Indeed, the actions of the limbs solidify the gains of their hearts for them.

Ashoura: Reviving the Islamic Values

(Part One - A)

The speech of His Eminence, the Religious Authority Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammad Husein Fadhlullah in opening the conference held by the Contemporary Islamic Thought Institution, under the title of "Ashoura: The Concept and the Function and the Potentials of Expressing", on 02/02/1430 H., 28/01/2009 A.D

Is history sacred

Are we a nation that sanctifies history, memorizes and repeats it, and lives in its caves and grottos, while forgetting the present and killing the future? Are we the remains of this history, who live its battles as though they were ours, and adopt its hatred, and move through its narrow lanes?

Why should we consider history, while we live in the present and look forward for the future?

The Quran mentioned a certain issue when it addressed the sacred history of the prophets, and the non-sacred history of the pharos and the tyrants.

This issue is that history is a wave of events that remain in our lives, because these events have contributed to forming the system of life. However, the time during which these events took place did not besiege them, but was a mere framework for these events to occur. After all, time fades away, and the events and causes are those that remain.

There are certain issues that fade away with time, or even before time passes away; they just die in the morning, and we miss them in the evening. Therefore, God wants us to take lessons from the history that survives, through studying the positive and negative elements of the spiritual character or the tyrants: "In their histories there is certainly a lesson for men of understanding." (12:111)

The lesson is to study all the cultural dimensions that accompany the circumstances of the issue, and to reach out to the idea which is rich in cultural values. This idea is thus, transformed to innovation which prompts the mind to innovate and the heart to beat lively. Thus, our movement will be rich with values, and the history is no more restricted to historical events, but rather becomes a renewed life.

So, when we embrace these lively elements that do not die, they might grant us a life, if we manage to overcome the obstructions that prevent us from opening up to these elements, because sometimes life becomes death and death becomes life itself:
He who dies and rests is not dead
The dead is the one who dies while still alive

The body might still beat with life, but the spirit living inside is dead, and vice versa.

Thus, the history of those who gave mankind life and a spiritual movement, must rest on faith and creed, especially when we open up to the lives of the prophets who ascended above, and lives the essence of the spiritual meanings, and granted love to all mankind, even those who do not believe in them and oppress them.

Prophet Muhammad peace be with him and his progeny used to tell those who contested him and his mission: "I gave you good advice, but you do not love those who give good advice" (07:79)

We should consider these humanitarian models that ascended above to the sky, and transformed the world to a sky, whose sun enlightens our lives with spiritual values. As such, we have two suns: one that lights the spaces and objects, and another one that enlightens our minds with reason, fills our hearts with love, and our movement with justice, good, and life.

🔺Ayatollah Sayed Kamal al Hayderi:

✔️I imagine that the walk to Imam Hussain (peace be with him’s shrine) on Arbaeen is from the most important keys and strongest (activities) of this blessed movement for spreading the message of (Imam) Hussain (peace be with him). However, subject to conditions, (it is) to benefit and profit (people) in knowledge, thought, education, and awakening of the Ummah. however, is this happening or not?

✔️We see all the tents (during the walk), (so) what is their purpose? Is their purpose and aim intellectual and educational? Or is their purpose just to give food and other services? Which one of them? May God reward those who are presenting these services (of food, water, and other services to the pilgrims)!

✔️However, the issue (at hand) is greater than (just) these services (of food etc). Imam Hussain (peace be with him’s objective) wasn’t just for people to walk to him 500 km or 5000 km. Rather he wanted his cause to be a torch that gives light to the path, to humanity. That is why if you were to refer to Imam Hussain’s (peace be with him) speech in Karbala, you will find him saying,

✔️ “If you don’t believe in the last day (day of Judgment), then (at least) be free men in your world!”

✔️(If) These words aren’t directed to me, (then) who is it directed to? To the Shi’a… No! To the Muslims… No! To those who believe in God… No! (Rather) it was directed to all of humanity, even to those who don’t believe in the Day of Judgment.

✔️This is who Hussain (peace be with him) is. (So) what I say now is directed to all those millions that go to the grave of Abi Abdillah al Hussain (peace be with him). We find the (above) hadith very clear… even if there isn’t a narration, we don’t need it, the Quranic text suffices. Are we at the present moment able to benefit (truly) from these rites and send a message to humanity, or do we find (with great regret) that this holy act and this sacrifice (of Imam Hussain peace be with him) of which there is none like it in history and even till the Day of Judgment a like will never come, has it (instead) fallen into the hands of ignorant people?

✔️I say ignorant, however I don’t doubt the intentions of anyone. I’m not saying that those who call towards some of these acts are like this or that… Never! But what I want to say, is that these acts are in reality in opposition to the movement of Imam Hussain (peace be with him) and it is upon the religious institutions (which) I shout and say again (that it is) upon the religious institutions to take these affairs relating to Imam Hussain (peace be with him) and to make them the most important thing for humanity, and to wake up the Ummah to reach the aims that Imam Hussain (peace be with him) wanted.

Letter of Imam Ali to Malik-e Ashtar
(Part Seven)

The ruler cannot acquit himself of the obligations laid on him by Allah in this matter except by striving and seeking help from Allah, by training himself to adhere to righteousness and by enduring on that account all that is light or hard.

1. The Army

🍁Put in command of your forces the man who in your view is the best well-wisher of Allah, His Prophet and your Imam. The most chaste of them in heart and the highest of them in endurance is one who is slow in getting angry, who accepts excuses, who is kind to the weak and is strict with the strong; violence should not raise his temper and weakness should not keep him sitting.

🍁Also associate with considerate people from high families, virtuous houses and decent traditions, then people of courage, valor, generosity and benevolence because they are repositories of honor and springs of virtues. Strive for their matters as the parents strive for their child.

🍁Do not regard anything that you do to strengthen them as big nor anything that you have agreed to do for them as little, even though it may be small because this would make them your well-wishers and create a good impression about you.

🍁Do not neglect to attend to their small matters. Confine yourself to their important matters because your small favors will also be of benefit to them while the important ones are such that they cannot ignore.

🍁That commander of the army should have such a status before you that he renders help to them equitably and spends from his money on them and on those of their families who remain behind so that all their worries converge on the one worry to fight the enemy.

The Way of Life of AhlulBayt (peace be with them)

There's a straight line on paper. How do you make this line smaller?

Answer: you simply draw a longer line alongside it.


🍃 This technique was implemented by the infallibles (peace be with them all).

🍃 That is, instead of cutting or tearing apart the way or efforts of the opponents or those negligent (of Qor’ānic values) by directly going against it/them, one should simply enhance one's own efforts and effectiveness in the environment and communities around themselves by being a true follower of the values and guidances of Qur'an and Ahlulbayt.

🍃 In simply following the Qor’anic values and guidance of Prophet and Ahlulbayt, one becomes naturally attuned to the ways of God and the principles and values of Qur'an and the Prophet and his progeny.

🍃 Thus, they (AhlulBayt and their true followers) personified the drawing of the longer line (with their deeds) alongside the 'shorter' line.

🍃 Moral and applied practice for the followers: never go against un-virtuous folks through direct confrontation.

🍃 Rather, do as Imam Sadiq (peace be with him) says: "Invite people to what is good with your deed, other than your tongues, so that they see tenacity, veracity, and piety in you".

🌺 Ayatollah Sayyed Jamāloddīn Bāstānī:

Disinclination to the world, if also accompanied with unwillingness to spirituality (and Godly values), can be depression, and apparently it seems so.

But if there is an attraction for the hereafter beside (disinclination to this material world), then this is not depression.

Whoever strives is not depressed; now (whichever) he is striving for, whether the world or the eternal life (hereafter).

آيت الله سيد جمال الدين باستاني:
بى ميلى به دنيا، اگر همراه بى ميلى به معنويات باشد مى تواند افسردگى باشد، و ظاهرا هست؛..

ولى اگر در كنار آن اشتياق به آخرت وجود داشته باشد، اين افسردگى نيست.

🏵”O Abd-ul Azīm, send my Salam (prayer of peace) to my best friends (whoever follows and listens to me) and tell them:

🏵 Do not let satanic-deception gain mastery over you. Command them to being truthful when talking and safeguarding the trust.

🏵 And command them to adopt silence, and to not argue and debate in worthless and un-beneficial matters with each other.

🏵 (Command them that) With cheerful faces they meet and visit each other.

🏵 These actions will serve to be a means of closeness to me. (And) Don't have an aggressive attitude so that (God forbid) it tears apart relations.

🏵 (For) I have promised myself that whoever does this and saddens one of my (true) friends (or followers) I will pray to God to punish severely that (aggressor) in this world and to raise him with the group of the miserable losers in the hereafter'".

🏵 Emphasize (this point) to our followers (who follow our knowledge and footsteps) that God makes the benevolent from among them most deserving of His forgiveness.

🏵 And in relation to the evil-doers from among them

- with exception to those

🔴 who have enjoined wickedness and polytheism,
🔴 or have been a means of constant pain to our friends,
🔴 or have a grudge towards them

- God has (even) made them deserving of His forgiveness, (of course) with the exception of the three groups mentioned, they will not be granted such leniency in forgiveness.

🔵 However if they repent and return (to the right path) from such evil intentions, wicked mentality, and vile actions of theirs, then they will be deserving of His pardon.

🏵 But.. if they remain as such, then God shall remove the spirit of faith from them forever, (thus leading) to be exiled from (the safe bounds of) our guardianship, (and as a result) they will not benefit from the friendship with us AhlulBayt.

🏵 And I seek refuge in God from such (disastrous) errors and ill consequences.

شیخ مفید رحمه الله در کتاب «اختصاص» از عبدالعظیم حسنی رضی الله عنه نقل کرده است که حضرت رضا علیه السلام به او فرمود :
🎯 ای عبدالعظیم؛ از طرف من به دوستانم سلام برسان و به آنها بگو:
🎯 شیطان را بر خود مسلّط نکنند.
و ایشان را دستور بده به راست گویی و امانت داری،
🎯 و امر کن که سکوت را پیشه خود سازند و از مجادله با یکدیگر خودداری کنند،
🎯 با روی خوش یکدیگر را ملاقات کنند، و به زیارت هم بروند که همانا این عمل باعث تقرّب به من می باشد،
🎯 درّنده خویی نداشته باشند که بخواهند یکدیگر را پاره کنند.
🎯 زیرا من قسم یاد کرده ام که هر که چنین کند و یکی از دوستان مرا خشمگین سازد از خدا بخواهم که او را در دنیا به عذاب سختی گرفتار کند و در آخرت از گروه زیانکاران باشد.
🎯 به دوستان ما توجه ده که خدا نیکو کرداران آنان را مورد بخشایش خویش قرار داده و بدکاران آنان را جز، آنهایی که
🔴 بدو شرک ورزند
🔴 و یا یکی از دوستان ما را
برنجانند
🔴 و یا در دل نسبت به آنان کینه بپرورند،
همه را مورد عفو قرار خواهد داد اما از آن سه گروه نخواهد گذشت و آنان را مورد بخشایش خویش قرار نخواهد داد.
🔵 مگر اینکه از قصد خود بازگردند و اگر از این اندیشه و عمل زشت خویش بازگردند، مورد آمرزش خواهند بود
🎯 اما اگر همچنان باقی باشند، خداوند روح ایمان را برای همیشه از دل آنان خارج ساخته و از ولایت ما نیز بیرون خواهد برد و از دوستی ما اهل بیت(ع) نیز بی بهره خواهند بود

🎪 فإنّی آلیت علی نفسی أنّه من فعل ذلک وأسخط ولیّاً من أولیائی دعوت اللَّه لیعذّبه فی الدنیا أشدّ العذاب وکان فی الآخره من الخاسرین.

🏵 (Command them that) With cheerful faces they meet and visit each other.

🏵 These actions will serve to be a means of closeness to me. (And) Don't have an aggressive attitude so that (God forbid) it tears apart relations.

🏵 (For) I have promised myself that whoever does this and saddens one of my (true) friends (or followers) I will pray to God to punish severely that (aggressor) in this world and to raise him with the group of the miserable losers in the hereafter'".

🏵 Emphasize (this point) to our followers (who follow our knowledge and footsteps) that God makes the benevolent from among them most deserving of His forgiveness.

🏵 And in relation to the evil-doers from among them

- with exception to those

🔴 who have enjoined wickedness and polytheism,
🔴 or have been a means of constant pain to our friends,
🔴 or have a grudge towards them

- God has (even) made them deserving of His forgiveness, (of course) with the exception of the three groups mentioned, they will not be granted such leniency in forgiveness.

🔵 However if they repent and return (to the right path) from such evil intentions, wicked mentality, and vile actions of theirs, then they will be deserving of His pardon.

🏵 But.. if they remain as such, then God shall remove the spirit of faith from them forever, (thus leading) to be exiled from (the safe bounds of) our guardianship, (and as a result) they will not benefit from the friendship with us AhlulBayt.

🏵 And I seek refuge in God from such (disastrous) errors and ill consequences.

🎪 یا عبدالعظیم، أبلغ عنّی أولیائی السلام، وقل لهم: أن لایجعلوا للشیطان علی أنفسهم سبیلاً.

🎪 وإقبال بعضهم علی بعض والمزاوره
🎪 فإنّ ذلک قربه إلیّ ولا یشغلوا أنفسهم بتمزیق بعضهم بعضاً،
🎪 فإنّی آلیت علی نفسی أنّه من فعل ذلک وأسخط ولیّاً من أولیائی دعوت اللَّه لیعذّبه فی الدنیا أشدّ العذاب وکان فی الآخره من الخاسرین.

🔴 أو آذى ولیّاً من أولیائی

Ashoura: Reviving the Islamic Values

(Part One - A)

The speech of His Eminence, the Religious Authority Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammad Husein Fadhlullah in opening the conference held by the Contemporary Islamic Thought Institution, under the title of "Ashoura: The Concept and the Function and the Potentials of Expressing", on 02/02/1430 H., 28/01/2009 A.D

Is history sacred

Are we a nation that sanctifies history, memorizes and repeats it, and lives in its caves and grottos, while forgetting the present and killing the future? Are we the remains of this history, who live its battles as though they were ours, and adopt its hatred, and move through its narrow lanes?

Why should we consider history, while we live in the present and look forward for the future?

The Quran mentioned a certain issue when it addressed the sacred history of the prophets, and the non-sacred history of the pharos and the tyrants.

This issue is that history is a wave of events that remain in our lives, because these events have contributed to forming the system of life. However, the time during which these events took place did not besiege them, but was a mere framework for these events to occur. After all, time fades away, and the events and causes are those that remain.

There are certain issues that fade away with time, or even before time passes away; they just die in the morning, and we miss them in the evening. Therefore, God wants us to take lessons from the history that survives, through studying the positive and negative elements of the spiritual character or the tyrants: "In their histories there is certainly a lesson for men of understanding." (12:111)

The lesson is to study all the cultural dimensions that accompany the circumstances of the issue, and to reach out to the idea which is rich in cultural values. This idea is thus, transformed to innovation which prompts the mind to innovate and the heart to beat lively. Thus, our movement will be rich with values, and the history is no more restricted to historical events, but rather becomes a renewed life.

So, when we embrace these lively elements that do not die, they might grant us a life, if we manage to overcome the obstructions that prevent us from opening up to these elements, because sometimes life becomes death and death becomes life itself:
He who dies and rests is not dead
The dead is the one who dies while still alive

The body might still beat with life, but the spirit living inside is dead, and vice versa.

Thus, the history of those who gave mankind life and a spiritual movement, must rest on faith and creed, especially when we open up to the lives of the prophets who ascended above, and lives the essence of the spiritual meanings, and granted love to all mankind, even those who do not believe in them and oppress them.

Prophet Muhammad peace be with him and his progeny used to tell those who contested him and his mission: "I gave you good advice, but you do not love those who give good advice" (07:79)

We should consider these humanitarian models that ascended above to the sky, and transformed the world to a sky, whose sun enlightens our lives with spiritual values. As such, we have two suns: one that lights the spaces and objects, and another one that enlightens our minds with reason, fills our hearts with love, and our movement with justice, good, and life.

🔺Ayatollah Sayed Kamal al Hayderi:

✔️I imagine that the walk to Imam Hussain (peace be with him’s shrine) on Arbaeen is from the most important keys and strongest (activities) of this blessed movement for spreading the message of (Imam) Hussain (peace be with him). However, subject to conditions, (it is) to benefit and profit (people) in knowledge, thought, education, and awakening of the Ummah. however, is this happening or not?

✔️We see all the tents (during the walk), (so) what is their purpose? Is their purpose and aim intellectual and educational? Or is their purpose just to give food and other services? Which one of them? May God reward those who are presenting these services (of food, water, and other services to the pilgrims)!

✔️However, the issue (at hand) is greater than (just) these services (of food etc). Imam Hussain (peace be with him’s objective) wasn’t just for people to walk to him 500 km or 5000 km. Rather he wanted his cause to be a torch that gives light to the path, to humanity. That is why if you were to refer to Imam Hussain’s (peace be with him) speech in Karbala, you will find him saying,

✔️ “If you don’t believe in the last day (day of Judgment), then (at least) be free men in your world!”

✔️(If) These words aren’t directed to me, (then) who is it directed to? To the Shi’a… No! To the Muslims… No! To those who believe in God… No! (Rather) it was directed to all of humanity, even to those who don’t believe in the Day of Judgment.

✔️This is who Hussain (peace be with him) is. (So) what I say now is directed to all those millions that go to the grave of Abi Abdillah al Hussain (peace be with him). We find the (above) hadith very clear… even if there isn’t a narration, we don’t need it, the Quranic text suffices. Are we at the present moment able to benefit (truly) from these rites and send a message to humanity, or do we find (with great regret) that this holy act and this sacrifice (of Imam Hussain peace be with him) of which there is none like it in history and even till the Day of Judgment a like will never come, has it (instead) fallen into the hands of ignorant people?

✔️I say ignorant, however I don’t doubt the intentions of anyone. I’m not saying that those who call towards some of these acts are like this or that… Never! But what I want to say, is that these acts are in reality in opposition to the movement of Imam Hussain (peace be with him) and it is upon the religious institutions (which) I shout and say again (that it is) upon the religious institutions to take these affairs relating to Imam Hussain (peace be with him) and to make them the most important thing for humanity, and to wake up the Ummah to reach the aims that Imam Hussain (peace be with him) wanted.
