The Mechanism of mystical Knowledge
🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸🔸

🖋Ayatollah Mutahhari States:

💠Some have asked: ‘you have not mentioned anything about the mechanism of Knowledge whose source and tool, according to mystics, are the heart and refinement of the self. Does Knowledge really have a mechanism, or a process of removing impediments along the way?’

💠Since the question is correct and reasonable to our topic, let me address it. One of its functions is that if a person engages in refining his self, his intellect becomes more clear sighted. In a dark hall, for example, we cannot see beyond a few meters. In order to see further, we are in need of light and space. One effect of refinement of the self is that it makes the space clearer for the intellect. But this is not the only function of refinement of the self as the heart also gives inspiration to man.

💠Meanwhile, they have asked about its mechanism. It is a good question. Let me highlight a mere reminder.

💠One of the very subtle issues and a very high and subtle psychological field is a sort of morality known today as ‘dynamic morality’. The mystics (Arifs) have labeled this ‘spiritual wayfaring’ (Sayr Wa sulook), and this is the very mechanism our colleagues want to know, and it is very significant.

💠In their study of the Orient, one of the issues to which the Europeans have given exceptional importance is exactly this one in which the mystics, through what Allamah Iqbal of Lahore called ‘inner experience’, have described the mechanism of the hearts functions as ‘stations and stages’ (manāzil wa marāhil).”

♦️Note: what Ayatollah Mutahhari just explained above relates to the stages and degrees of Knowledge. He highlights a few theories about knowledge having one stage or multiple stages. In explaining the mystic (Irfan) approach, he emphasizes that attaining Knowledge has many stages and stations, through which refinement of the self (tazkiye nafs) is the prescribed method to achieve and pass those stages in order to arrive at the destined station (i.e. insane kamil [perfect man])

Loving but not Following

✔️Ayatollah Mutahhari States:

📍“...some from this group go to the extremes and consider simply the claim of having faith, or in reality a simple affiliation, to be the criterion of judgement”.

📍For example, the Murji’i sect in the era of a Banu Umayya would propagate this idea, and fortunately, with the decline of Banu Umayya, they also ceased to exist. In that age, the Shi’a position, inspired by the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt, was opposite to the Murji’i one, but unfortunately the Murji’i view has lately taken hold in new clothing among some of the common (self-proclaimed) Shi’as.

📍Some simpleminded Shias consider mere affiliation with Amir al-Mu’mineen (peace be with him) to be sufficient for salvation, and this idea is the basic factor behind the Shias poor state in the modern era”.

🔸Beautiful Story from the lectures of Ostad Ansarian

🔹One day Prophet Moses (peace be with him) faced the sky above and supplicated: "My Lord, let me see your worst of servants". God replied "go to the city entrance early morning and he will be the first person to exit the city".

Moses got up early morning and went to the city gates. He saw a father and his son to leave the city.
Moses said: "this poor guy doesn't know he's the worst of God's creation".

Thereafter, Moses turned toward the sky again and after thanking God for showing him what he asked, supplicated: "My Lord, I wish to see your best of servants". A reply was given: "at the end of the night go to the city gates and my best servant will be the last one to enter the city".

When night fell and everyone entered, Moses saw the last one to enter, seeing it was the same father and his son!

Moses then asked God, "My God how is it that your worst of servants and best of servants is the same person?"

The reply came back, "when he left this morning he was the worst, but when his sons gaze fell on the mighty mountains surrounding the city, he asked his father: 'what is mightier than these mountains?'
Father replied: 'the sky'.

Son asked: 'what is bigger than the sky?'
The father, when he looked at his son, let forth (sincere) tears and said: 'my son, your father's sins are bigger than the sky'.

Son asked: 'what is bigger than your sins?'
The father didn't have anymore tolerance, and his stubbornness withered, replying (in a sincerity): 'my dear son, the kindness and forgiveness of God is greater and vaster than anything there is'.
