This book lays out a particular path through a range of issues I’ve been thinking and writing about for over thirty years. If I’d tried to write it as a traditional scholarly treatise, it would have been a thousand pages long, I probably would never have finished it, and even if I had, you probably would never have read it. Instead, I’ve taken a chance and written it in a fashion that I hope will be accessible to anyone curious about thought and meaning. I trust that specialists can forgive the informality and find some interest in the way the book connects themes from linguistics, philosophy, cognitive science and art. Many parts of the story, but not all, appear in fuller form in my books Semantics and Cognition, Consciousness and the Computational Mind, Foundations of Language, and Language, Consciousness, Culture.

The Significance of Sincere Deeds

Ayatollah Musawi Ardabili's Barzakh Experience, narrated by his close friend (Asghar Fardi):
Some time later, I heard that Hajj Aghaye (Ardabili) had a brain stroke and was sent to the hospital. I heard that at that time, Agha Ardabili had a heart attack, but he recovered. Then again, after a while, he had another heart attack but lived it, surprising the doctors. It was most likely that his remaining energy would collapse him again. I spoke to Dr. Ghulamreza Shāfi'i, who was the head of the operation, made an appointment with him and so we visited Ayatollah Ardabili (at his home when recovered). Hajj Aghaye (Ardabili) was present in his home in Tehran resting. When we arrived, Agha Muhammadi Gūlpāykāni was also present, having arrived before us. After some time sitting with Hajj Aghaye (Ardabili), we decided to leave because visiting the sick shouldn't be too long. We stood up and Hajj Agha bid farewell to all of us, including Aghaye Shafi'i. As we were all leaving, Hajj Agha told me to stay. So I sat on the pillow mat and Hajj Agha then relayed to me that he wanted to share with me his unique experience.
"When I had the brain stroke, I left the world for a short time but I still remembered what happened in that short time."
Agha then requested at this moment not to disclose his experience to others (now that he has passed away, I will share it, for it was a grand experience and a lesson for all).
He then said: "when I realized I had left this (material) world, I called out my eldest son's name to be (more) certain that I was not in the material world. They (Angels) said he is in the other world. I then called out my second son's name, and they (Angels) replied again that I was in a different realm and he is located in the material realm.
At that time, they asked me what I had brought with me. So I then pondered for a moment, concentrating and wondering, because I had to bring to mind my actions from the (material) world.
I then said, 'I wrote for the first time in Shi'i history, a compilation and analyzation in depth about "Penalty (in islam)". The Angels said, 'you did that in order to brag that you are the first one to write (about that topic) in Shi'a history'. My desperation got intense.
I then said, 'I established the largest university in regards to Islamic Sciences'. They replied, 'you also established that deed because you couldn't attain other (social) ranks'.
I then said that I was the founder of Ameeril Mo'mineen center, and they yet again rejected.
I thought to myself, maybe my life-long years spent guiding the people at Ameeril Mo'mineen mosque would have been my salvation today, but did they?
At that instance, I remembered that one night, as I exited the masjid after Maghrib and Isha prayers, an old lady approached me and pleaded that her daughter had a suitor, and if she wasn't to be married then she and the rest of them would be grounded at home (by their financial situation), and surely she would have no energy to undergo such circumstances. I took the chance right away and invited her to my home where I relayed the situation to my wife, then introduced her. I told my wife to help this old lady from our savings and not from the religious funds (khums), in order that she may arrange her daughters wedding.
As I finished telling the Angels this account, they exclaimed: 'Yes! This is accepted. Because of this (pristinely sincere) deed, we'll forgive all the other (deeds)'.
As Aghaye Ardabili was narrating this experience segment by segment, he was shaking and crying like an orphan. Finally, he said, 'someone after one lifetime of struggle (with the soul and people), preaching, research, quoting of Imams (peace be with them all), did not come to hand (and help me succeed). Instead, one small (sincere) deed was what came to my aid'".

🏕️Masnavi Tale about How a Prince troubled a sleeping man into whose mouth a snake had entered
A wise prince saw that a snake had entered the mouth of a man while he slept. He saw and immediately ran to him. He hit him awake and forced him to run off in dread and fear. The man hid behind a rotten apple tree, whereat the prince forced him to eat the rotten apples. So many he ate, drowsy he felt. So much so, that some fell out of his full stomach, thus questioning the wise prince “what crime did I commit to anger you”?
The prince on his horse continued to push him to run and run with a full stomach. By evening though, the man at last had vomited out food both good and bad and also the wretched snake. On seeing the snake, his pain and aches had vanished and he ran before the prince and prostrated in thanks. And he said to the prince “just like a mother you rushed to me... like a donkey from you I tried to flee.”
“if I’d given hints” the prince said, “your bravery would’ve dissolved through dread. If i told you about the snake, sheer terror would’ve made your spirit quake”.
The prince continued, “I carried on, your curses I ignored, and I prayed silently ‘make things easy My Lord’. I didn’t have permission to tell you, but still I had to show you what to do. And due to inner pain I prayed inside, they know not Oh God, my people please still guide.
Hostility from sages is like this: their poison will instead fill you with bliss.
An idiot’s friendship, though, leads to perdition... as shown to you by this profound tradition.

A droplet of rain fell from a cloud
Over the sea, wide and profound;
It felt ashamed when it saw the sea;
It was about to never be found.
It thought, 'who am I when there is the sea?
If the sea exists, then who am I, this me?'
It found itself unworthy, therefore
An oyster appeared, opening its core.
It was taken and grown until it became
A pearl of value, honor and fame.
It knocked on the door of non-being; however,
It found existence, exalted forever.
The saints have realised
That their being is a facade;
If one sees himself,
He can never see God.
You can't pretend to be noble and grand;
It's not a matter of name or brand.
If you are modest and humble
Then you shall grow;
If you're arrogant and proud
You'll fall below.
For one who's deceived by the glamour of this world,
Having a share of religion is odd;
When one is proud and sees himself,
Don't expect that he can ever see God.

Letter of Imam Ali to Malik e Ashtar
(Part One)
Written for Malik-e Ashtar Nakha'i, when the status of Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr had become precarious and Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (peace be with him) had appointed Malik-e Ashtar as the governor of Egypt and the surrounding areas. This document contains the worlds highest and greatest number of eminent and outstanding statements:
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
💠This is what God's servant Ali ibn Abi Talib has ordered Malik ibn al-Harith al-Ashtar in his instrument (of appointment) for him when he made him Governor of Egypt for the collection of its revenues, fighting its enemies, seeking the good of its people and making its cities prosperous.💠
💠He has ordered him to fear Allah, to prefer obedience to Him and to follow what He has commanded in His Book (Holy Quran) out of His obligatory and elective commands, without following which one cannot achieve virtue, nor (can one) be evil save by opposing them and ignoring them and to support the cause of Allah the Glorified One, with his heart, hand and tongue because Allah Whose name is Sublime takes the responsibility for helping him who helps Him and for protecting him who gives Him support.💠
💠He also orders him to break his heart off from passions and to restrain it at the time of their increase because the heart leads towards evil unless Allah has mercy. 💠
Qualifications of a Governor and his Responsibilities:
💠Then, know O Malik, that I have sent you to an area where there have been governments before you, both just as well as oppressive.💠
💠People would now watch your dealings as you used to watch the dealings of the rulers before you and they (people) would criticize you as you criticized them (rulers).💠
Surely, the virtuous are known by the reputation that Allah circulates for them through the tongues of His creatures. Therefore, the best collection with you should be the collection of good deeds.💠
💠So, control your passions and check your heart from doing what is not lawful for you because checking the heart means detaining it just half way between what it likes and dislikes.💠
💠Habituate your heart to mercy for the subjects and to affection and kindness for them. Do not stand over them like greedy beasts who feel it is enough to devour them since they (people) are of two kinds: either your brethren in religion or your likes in creation.💠
💠They would commit slips and encounter mistakes. They may act wrongly, willfully or out of negligence. So, extend to them your forgiveness and pardon them in the same way as you would like Allah to extend His forgiveness and to pardon you because you are over them and your responsible Commander (Imam) is over you, while Allah is over the one who appointed you. 💠
He (Allah) has sought you to manage their affairs and tried you through them.💠
💠Do not set yourself to fight Allah because you have no power to meet His power and you cannot do without His pardon and mercy. Do not regret forgiving or being merciful in punishing. Do not act hastily during your anger if you can find a way out of it. Do not say: “I have been given authority, I enjoy it when I order,” because it engenders confusion in the heart, weakens the religion and takes one to his ruin.💠
💠If the authority in which you are placed produces pride or vanity in you, look at the greatness of the realm of Allah over you and His might the like of which you do not even possess over yourselves. This will curb your haughtiness, cure you of your high temper and bring back to you your wisdom which had gone away from you.💠
💠Beware of comparing yourself to Allah in His greatness or likening yourself to Him in His power, for Allah humiliates every claimant of power and disgraces everyone who is haughty.💠

PROPHET'S HISTORIC GHADIR SERMON
Part V
O people! Study the Qur'an and comprehend its verses, look into its fixed verses and do not follow what is similar thereof, for by Allah, none shall explain to you what it forbids you from doing, nor clarify its exegesis, other than the one whose hand I am taking and whom I am lifting to me, the one whose arm I am taking and whom I am lifting, so that I may enable you to understand that: Whoever among you takes me as his master, this, Ali is his master, and he is' Ali ibn Abu Talib, my Brother and wasi, and his appointment as your wali is from Allah, the Sublime, the Exalted One, a commandment which He revealed to me.
O people! ' Ali and the good ones from among my offspring from his loins are the Lesser Weight, while the Qur'an is the Greater One: each one of them informs you of and agrees with the other. They shall never part till they meet me at the Pool (of Kawthar). They are the Trustees of Allah over His creation, the rulers on His earth.
Indeed now I have performed my duty and conveyed the Message. Indeed you have heard what I have said and explained. Indeed Allah, the Exalted One and the Sublime, has said, and so have Ion behalf of Allah, the Exalted One and the Sublime, that there is no Ameerul-Mo'mineen (Commander of the Faithful) save this Brother of mine; no authority over a believer is permissible after me except to him.
Then the Prophet patted ' Ali's arm, lifting him up. Since the time when the Messenger of Allah ascended the pulpit, Ameerul-Mo'mineen was one pulpit step below where the Messenger of Allah had seated himself on his pulpit, while' Ali was on his (Prophet's) right side, one pulpit step lower, now they both appeared to the gathering to be on the same level; the Prophet lifted him up. The Prophet then raised his hands to the heavens in supplication while' Ali's leg was touching the knee of the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet continued his sermon thus:
O people! This is' Ali, my Brother, Wasi, the one who comprehends my knowledge, and my successor over my nation, over everyone who believes in me. He is the one entrusted with explaining the Book of Allah, the most Exalted One, the Sublime, and the one who invites people to His path. He is the one who does whatever pleases Him, fighting His enemies, befriending His friends who obey Him, prohibiting disobedience to Him. He is the successor of the Messenger of Allah and Ameerul- Mo'mineen, the man assigned by Allah to guide others, killer of the renegades and of those who believe in equals to Allah, those who violate the Commandments of Allah. Allah says, "My Word shall not be changed, nor am I in the least unjust to the servants" (Qur'an, 50.29), and by Your Command, O Lord, do I (submit and) say, O Allah! Befriend whoever befriends him (Ali) and be the enemy of whoever antagonizes him; support whoever supports him and abandon whoever abandons him; curse whoever disavows him, and let Your Wrath descend on whoever usurps his right.
O Lord! You revealed a verse in honor of' Ali, Your wali, in its explanation and to effect Your own appointment of him this very day did You say, "This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour on you, and chosen for you Islam as a religion" (Qur'an, 5.3); "And whoever desires a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers" (Qur'an, 3:85).
Lord! I implore You to testify that I have conveyed (Your Message).

PROPHET'S HISTORIC GHADIR SERMON
PART Xl
O people! Perform your pilgrimage to the House by perfecting your religion and by delving into fiqh, and do not leave the sacred places except after having repented and abandoned (the doing of anything prohibited).
O people! Uphold prayers and pay the zakat as Allah, the Exalted One and the Sublime, commanded you; so, if time lapses and you were short of doing so or you forgot, ' Ali is your wali and he will explain for you.
He is the one whom Allah, the Exalted and the Sublime, appointed for you after me as the custodian of Hiscreation. He is from me and I am from him, and he and those who will succeed him from my progeny shall inform you of anything you ask them about, and they shall clarify whatever you do not know.
Halal and haram things are more than I can count for you now or explain, for a commandment to enjoin what is permissible and a prohibition from what is not permissible are both on the same level, so I was ordered (by my Lord) to take your oath of allegiance and to make a covenant with you to accept what I brought you from Allah, the Exalted One and the Sublime, with regards to' Ali Ameerul-Mo'mineen and to the wasis after him who are from me and from him, a standing Imamate whose seal is al-Mehdi till the Day he meets Allah Who decrees and Who judges.
O people! I never refrained from informing you of everything permissible or prohibitive; so, do remember this and safeguard it and advise each other to do likewise; do not alter it; do not substitute it with something else.
I am now repeating what I have already said: Uphold the prayers and pay the zakat and enjoin righteousness and forbid abomination.
The peak of enjoining righteousness is to resort to my speech and to convey it to whoever did not attend it and to order him on my behalf to accept it and to (likewise) order him not to violate it, for it is an order from Allah, the Exalted and the Sublime, and there is no knowledge of enjoining righteousness nor prohibiting abomination except that it is with a ma'soom Imam.
0 people! The Qur'an informs you that the Imams after him are his (' Ali's) descendants, and I have already informed you that they are from me and from him, for Allah says in His Book, " And he made it a word to continue in his posterity so that they may return " (Qur'an, 43:28) while I have said: "You shall not stray as long as you uphold both of them (simultaneously)."
O people! (Uphold) piety, (uphold) piety, and be forewarned of the Hour as Allah, the Exalted and the Sublime, has said, "0 people! Guard (yourselves) against (punishment from) your Lord; surely the violence of the Hour is a grievous thing" (Qur'an, 22:1).
Remember death, resurrection, the judgment, the scales, and the account before the Lord of the Worlds, and (remember) the rewards and the penalty. So whoever does a good deed shall be rewarded for it, and whoever commits a sin shall have no place in the Gardens.

Spiritual connection of Shias with Ali:
"Rameelah was a Shia of Ali. He says:
'While in Kufa, I suffered from fever and shivering for some days. I was unable to attend prayer behind Amirul Momineen.
It was Friday. I found some relief and experienced that my fever had reduced. I thought how nice if I take Friday bath and go to the mosque to pray behind Ali. So I came to the Mosque of Kufa.
Ali began to give the sermon from the pulpit. My fever returned and I began to tremble again, but I controlled myself. After the completion of the sermon and concluding the prayer, Ali sent someone for me.
I went to him, and He asked
me, 'Rameelah! What had happened to you when I was on the pulpit? You looked very restless and uncomfortable!'
I replied, 'I am suffering from fever for quite some time. I felt somewhat better today and hence I came to the mosque to attend your sermon when again I was disturbed by fever and shivering'.
The summary of Imam Ali's reply is this, 'This fever and shivering of yours has also entered me'.
I asked, 'Is it so with those who are in the Mosque or it is so with those outside too?'
Amirul Momineen said, 'Throughout the world, be it in east or west whenever one of our Shias becomes restless,
we too experience that restlessness'".

Meeting of the grand Ayatollah Boroujerdi with a great Eastern Philosopher and his visit of Ahlulbayt.
Late Sheikh Muhammad Sharif Rāzi has mentioned in his book “The Treasure of Scholars”:
💢 In the month of Dhi-Hajjah in 1368 hijri, I was at the house of the late Ayatollah Hojjat (RA), and the late Mirza Mahdi Āshtiyani was there.
💢 Ayatollah Borujerdi and Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Taghi Khwansāri came to see him.
💢 After the formalities and compliments, Ayatullah Hojjat said to Ayatollah Boroujerdi: Agha Mirza Mehdi Ashtiani have a beautiful Mokashefah (unveiling into the unseen) and it is appropriate if he himself narrates it.
💢 Agha Mīrza Āshtiyāni said: "I am having jaundice, and so I have been traveling abroad for treatment, but I have not been cured," he said. In 1365 (AH), when the Marxists had dominated the north and west of Iran, I visited Mashhad for pilgrimage.
💢 During the bus (ride there) I suddenly so sick that the passengers and the driver thought I had a stroke. They stopped the bus and took me out for help.
💢 Then I saw (found myself) that I was in Arafāt, and many heavenly lights were coming to the ground. And I saw that the people were attracted to one side.
💢 I asked: what's going on ? They said: Hazrat Rasoul (prophet Mohammad peace be with him and his progeny) has just arrived.
💢 I went to that side and saw few tents next to each other. The big tent belonged to the Prophet (peace be with him and his progeny). I passed over to the tent and visited the Prophet. I wanted to say about my sickness and my other anxieties and needs, but he (Prophet) said: "since you are pilgrimage of my son Reza (peace be with him), go to the tent that belongs to him” to see him.
💢 Then I went to the tent of Hazrat Imām Reza, and I mentioned three of my needs.
🔸 The first about my sickness, he said: It is destined to stay with you until you die.
🔸 Second: about the trial and corruptions of Marxists, He said: "Soon their evils will pass by. And you are all safe until you connect with (our) shrines and mourn in Majaalis of us Ahlulbayt with true recognition of us.
🔸And the third was about my personal issue. Regarding that he said: This will be done also.

Hojjatol Islam Fateminiya: “I request you to not be quick in responding”.
“I am your brother whose beard has turned white, and I highly ask you to never be quick in answering, responding. Many are very hasty when it comes to responding. I tell the youth it’ll never be late to respond later (first think, process the situation, then answer), so hold yourself a bit.
Did you get the point? Sometimes, quick responses deprive one (from reaching higher levels of tawfiq and erfan). Practice patience and respond a little later.
Sometimes, we attack an individual’s enthusiasm. They come and say with zeal: ‘this cloth that I bought has no likes of it in the world’!
Let the person talk, have his joy, and feel comfortable. Instead, we quickly respond: ‘heck no! These fabrics are everywhere (cheap quality)’!
(The point is here) attacking the enthusiasm of someone, not letting one express their passion are all against the values of Shiism”.
