Previously presented as a feature on the Corcoran Gallery of Art website from 2011 through September 2014, this scholarly apparatus contains in-depth research and documentation for each of the 102 paintings highlighted in the accompanying volume Corcoran Gallery of Art: American Paintings to 1945. These works are among the nearly 9,000 Corcoran works that have been accessioned by the National Gallery of Art. The apparatus provides provenance, exhibition history, published and unpublished references, technical notes, and data on related works, and is a significant resource for art historians, educators, and the general public. The extensive research on these paintings resulted in recovering more than 50 original titles, dates, and attributions, and filling in numerous provenance gaps. While this information was kept up to date through 2014, more recent research on each work can be found on the collection pages of the National Gallery of Art website. (When the Corcoran Gallery of Art closed in 2014 the National Gallery of Art accessioned much of its collection and became custodian of its publications. This and other out-of-print Corcoran volumes have been made freely available as PDFs in an effort to perpetuate the legacy of that institution.)

There’s only one mantra for you in the very beginning: read, read, and read some more! But
because of the immense amount of publications that are available, you can’t just read
without a plan. You’ve got to be focused. One way to do this is to identify 5-10 relevant
keywords for the broad topic in which you are interested. Write these key-words down, and
make notes on how you search them.
Limit your search:
Depending on what makes sense, you can limit the scope of your search to:
• certain scientific literature databases instead of going through everything you find on
online
• publishing dates (e.g. if you work in a quickly developing field, you may look only at the
articles published in the last 5 years)
• geographic areas (e.g. if you do research on sea-ice particles, you’ll focus on the polar
regions, if you want to do research on ‘Fake-News’ in US-media, the US will be your main
focus).
• particular approaches, experimental set-ups or methods applied
Do not google, but use databases with scholarly articles ( e.g. Web of Science, Scopus,
PubMed, or Science Direct depending on subject area.)

The Science of Self-Learning
Peter Hollins
How to learn effectively when you have to be both the teacher and student. Work smarter and save yourself countless hours.
Self-learning is not just about performing better in the classroom or the office. It's about being able to aim your life in whatever direction you choose and conquering the obstacles in front of you.
Replicable methods and insights to build expertise from ground zero.
The Science of Self-Learning focuses not only on learning, but what it means to direct your own learning. Anyone can read a book, but what about more? You will learn to deconstruct a topic and then construct your own syllabus and plan. Gathering information, initial research, having a dialogue with new information - unlock these skills and you will unlock your life.
Make complex topics painless and less intimidating to approach and break down.
Peter Hollins has studied
Holistic Learning.
How to Study Better, Understand More and
Actually “Get” What You Want to Learn.
Holistic learning is a process for learning more effectively. The concept for holistic learning
came out of several small articles I wrote beginning with a popular entry entitled, “How to Ace
Your Finals Without Studying.” The main idea I presented was that some people effortlessly
learn new concepts and material while others struggle. I believe that the difference between
these factors is mostly due to a process called holistic learning.
As many people who read the initial articles on holistic learning commented, you may
notice that your own learning style closely reflects holistic learning. Holistic learning isn't a new
technique or revolutionary idea. It is simply a way of explaining how smart people think!

A 2019 study concluded that those who spent between 120 minutes or more outside per week reported positive effects on their general health and well-being when compared to those who didn't get outside at all.
Doctors have been catching on; more and more providers have been instructing their patients to turn to nature to improve their health and they're getting creative in how they do it.”

According to the Oxford American Dictionary, a study is a "detailed investigation and analysis of a subject or a situation" and research is "the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions." In other words, a study is sort of like looking into what is already there and then presenting it. Research is testing new hypothesis about an already established or a new idea or fact.
