The history of Ashoura:
We remember Ashoura to live the circumstances of this occasion - on which hundreds of years have passed but still beats with spiritual meanings. When we remember the figures of Ashoura, we feel that each and every personality is a spirit by itself, one that flies and ascends above and transforms the body to a spiritual beat, joining between the intellect and the emotions and between the matter and the spirit.
Therefore, we look at Ashoura based on the spiritual values and the movement whose leaders and faithful masses are open to righteousness, instead of viewing it as a tragedy. It is a movement that has two open eyes looking at the nation and the world, and staring at the Islamic and humanitarian march as a whole.
Even when we discuss Ashoura in terms of the Imamate, we do not mean to give it a sectarian aspect, but it rather gives it a spiritual framework that is open to mankind and Islam as a whole.
From Ashoura, we enrich ourselves with its various dimensions and meanings. Our problem is that we gave Ashoura sectarian meanings and locked it in the prison of our creeds and backwardness and customs which lack any cause, because we did not see the cause Al-Husein peace be with him represents, but the person who is filled with wounds, the one who experienced thirst and the tragedy of his sons and relatives.
We looked at Al-Husein peace be with him as the person, not the mission and the cause. So we abandoned the mission and did not find Al-Husein peace be with him and we will never find him if he does not represent to us a mission, freedom, glory, dignity and an entity that represents mankind and Islam. This is the real essence of Ashoura.
But we limited the Karbala (tragic) character to the extent that our tears have become cold. Only those who consider the freedom, resistance, opposition, and challenge shed warm tears when they think of the tragedy.
The issue of Ashoura through the slogans raised by Imam Al-Husein peace be with him is a humanitarian issue. Imam Al-Husein peace be with him used to look at the human being, go into his inner feelings and concerns about his humanity from those who crush the human character of the people. What did he say when he described the rulers of Bani Umayah? He said: "They took the money of Allah as theirs, and regarded His people as their slaves." He is saying that the public money which organizes the people's lives is the money that belongs to God: "And give them of the wealth of Allah which He has given you." (24:33). This money should be spent in what pleases God, and in order for the people to live in dignity and glory. But this money became the money of the prince and his entourage. In our times, the money of the nation, particularly the oil, has become the money of a certain family and a certain king and sultan and those who kiss the feet of the sultan.
Many of those who talk about the nation and Islam glorify these kings and families. They actually worship the family and its head, and then they talk to you about the belief in one God, and then hold other people as infidels through some jurisprudences, but they worship those who have money: "They took the money of Allah for themselves and enslaved His people."
The contemporary pledge and the historical pledge
During Al-Hurra battle, we saw that Yazid asked his Wali who triumphed over the people of Al-Madina to ask for their pledge in their capacity as slaves for Yazid. They used to enslave the people by the power of money and sword. If we look at history books, we see that when the pledge was obtained for Yazid, a man who has a sword in one hand, and money in the other hand, said: Who gives the pledge to Yazid will get the money, and who doesn't will get this sword. After that, Yazid was the "Commander of the Faithful."
Today, we are witnessing a contemporary kind of the pledge, one that rests on money. For example, people gave their pledge to President George Bush and today they are giving the pledge to the European Union and many Arab figures, for various considerations and ambitions.
💠Ayatollah Motahari states:
🔸"The Quran is anchored in reproaching those who are under the yoke of blindly following their ancestors and forefathers and refuse to think so as to set themselves free. What is the purpose of the Quran in this reproach? It's purpose is training. That is, it actually wants to awaken people to set discernment, reasoning and thinking as their scale and criterion and not to do anything merely on the pretext that their forefathers did so.One day, I listed the Quranic verses about blind following and imitation of forbearers, I observed that they are many. And what was interesting for me was that no prophet invited his people without being met with this excuse:
🔺إِنَّا عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِم مُّقْتَدُونَ
'we found our fathers following a creed and we are indeed following in their footstep' (Quran 43:23).
🔹The prophets' communities were very diverse as far as their traditions were concerned. Every prophet raised an issue which was relevant to his community's way of life and faced a problem unique to that community. Yet there was one problem common to all communities and which all prophets faced, and that was the burden of imitating forefathers and predecessors; in today's parlance, it is called 'traditionalism' [(pertaining to cultural customs)]. On the contrary, the prophets awakened the peoples minds, telling them to think..
🔺أَوَلَوْ كَانَ آبَاؤُهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَهْتَدُونَ
'What(!?), Even if their fathers neither applied any reason nor were guided?'" (Quran 2:170)

💠Islamic View of God💠
🌻Allamah Muhammad Hussayn Tabātabā'i':
🔹"Consciousness and perception, which are intertwined with man's very being, make evident by their very nature the existence of God as well as the world. For, contrary to those who express doubt about their own existence and everything else and consider the world as illusion and fantasy, we know that a human being at the moment of his coming into existence, when he is already conscious and possesses perception, discovers himself and the world. That is to say, he has no doubt that “He exists and things other than he exist." As long as man is man this comprehension and knowledge exist in him and cannot be doubted, nor do they undergo any change.
🔹The perception of this reality and existence which man affirms through his intelligence, in opposition to the views of the sophist and skeptic, is immutable and can never be proven false. That is to say, the claim of the sophist and the skeptic which negates reality can never be true, because of man's very existence. There is within the immense world of existence a permanent and abiding reality which pervades it and which reveals itself to the intelligence.
🔹Yet each of the phenomena of this world which possesses the reality that We discover as conscious and perceiving human beings loses its reality sooner or later and becomes nonexistent. From this fact itself it is evident that the visible world and its parts are not the essence of reality (which can never be obliterated or destroyed). Rather, they rely upon a permanent Reality through which they gain reality and by means of which they enter into existence. As long as they are connected and attached to it they possess existence and as soon as they are cut off from it they become nonexistent.
🔹We call this Immutable Reality, which is imperishable (that is Necessary Being), God".

Acting the Ashoura Events
Date: 01/12/2011 A.D - H
An interview with Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammad Husain Fadhlollah
Translated by: Manal Samhat
http://english.bayynat.org.lb/Ashoura/Ashoura_Events.htm#.W5nqK9EpCf0
Q: You have recently called for acting and performing the Husseini tragedy of the Imam’s martyrdom on both theatre and television. Do not you think that you will face many objections from different jurists, since this could be unfamiliar to people and to jurists as well?
A: I do not think that well-educated and open-minded jurists who are fully aware of modern technology and its impact on the modern man would reject that from a jurisprudential point of view, if the means conform to the Islamic criteria. Indeed, we are all fully aware that the modern man is capable of using such technologies to deliver his messages. Similarly, Islam would make use of them so as to be widely spread and universally understood.
I know that some jurists and even ordinary people usually fear what is new and are wary of undertaking new steps, thinking that this newness would undermine what they are used to. However, we believe that swimming against the current is risky and needs patience; so, we advise those who are creative by their nature and are always looking for the best to endure the difficulties that will be facing them.
We all agree that customs are neither the end of the world nor they possess any sense of holiness. Thus, Allah, the Most Exalted, orders us in His Holy Book to liberate ourselves from the constraints of blind traditions and conventions. Allah wants us to observe, contemplate and think about such customs, in a way that makes us accept what conforms to our Islamic concepts and reject what does not, for Allah says: "We have found our fathers following a certain religion; we are merely walking in their footsteps. Each (apostle) said: What if I bring you a better guidance than that which you found your fathers following? But they replied: We deny the message you have brought." (43:23-24). Thus, we do not sanctify what is familiar. We believe that we ought to accompany the developments of life in a way that conforms to the Islamic general guidelines, which we do not believe that developing the ways of showing the tragedy of Ashoura violates.
Q: The act of changing the way we celebrate Ashoura to fit the mentality of this century is so important. But do not you think that this step will be followed by many others and lead to influential changes to several other Islamic concepts and issues in the coming generations?
A: Islamic concepts and thoughts are constant in their original and real content, but, here, we are talking about changing the means of expression and not the content. However, it has certain dynamism in Ijtihad, as a result of addressing new issues. Therefore, we do not usually fear the changes we have made or we are still making just because we are afraid that it will surpass the Islamic lines. We believe that the open minded and watchful jurists who understand the content of the Islamic conception and the mentality of our generations constitute a guarantee against any deviation.

❓Who were these esteemed individuals who were able to traverse the varying stages of Jihad al-Nafs, and enter into a consciousness where their souls became detached from the physical vessel of their earthly existence, even during life of this earthly abode?
💪🏻As any creation of the Almighty, they were brought into this world to train and act for a greater aim. Just as we have been gifted the opportunity of this life, and the capacity to enjoy His bounties; He similarly granted these individuals the pleasures and joys of life, equipped them with sound bodies, faculties, and senses, and the guidance of rational principles and divine legislation.
🖤The tragedy of Karbala unfolds the reality of man, and puts the identity of the soul in perspective and where it lies. As we explore the companions of Imam al-Hussayn (as), we discover the differing states, layers, and dimensions of the soul. This allegiance, to stand up for the truth, allowed the manifestation of these souls’ highest potential.
✨These souls, having balanced the necessity of observing the outward and inner forms of excellence, perceived the unveiled truth. They understood their time and place, knowing full well, that if not for their actions in these precise moments the trajectory of the world would have been directed into hands of corruption and dissonance, ready to obliterate every ounce of truth that stood in its path. However, praise be to Allah (swt) the only benefactor of our aims, who granted the destiny of mankind to be one encapsulated by His light, and who enabled the truth to reach the hearts of nations to come, and from which would allow His plan to be manifested.

🔹 O God! Thank you (for tolerating with mercy) to our misdeeds and our laziness (for not putting enough efforts to do good deeds and asking forgiveness), while (I promise you that) in our hearts we have a definite repentance and honest excuse on our tongue.
🔹 O my Lord! We belong to this month in which you gave us honor and bestowed us the chance of perceiving (its great bounties) while the misfortunate ones did not know the value of their time and were deprived of their bounty because of their bad intentions and carelessness.
🔹 You are the superintendent of what your knowledge has bestowed upon us and what your tradition has guided unto us.
🔹 And by your grace and favor, we rose up with success in fasting and prayers. And with in regard to shortcomings we performed "a little bit of too much" (but nonetheless hope that you forgive our less deeds with shortcomings and accept it by your favor).

🐎From Thaarallah to Baqiyyatallah
⛓️Two men from the Bani Asad tribe were following Imam Hussein (AS) after completing their Hajj. They followed the trace of the Imam's caravan and finally find him in Zarood. As they were approaching the caravan, they saw a man coming from the direction of Kufa. They stopped and asked him whether there was any news from Kufa. He said "I had not left Kufa until I saw Muslim bin Aqeel and Hani bin Urwah being martyred. I saw that their legs were tied with ropes and their corpses being dragged in the streets of Kufa." [Nafasul Mahmum]
🥀The men then reached Imam Hussein (AS) and told him that they had just received some news about Kufa from a reliable source. They asked the Imam (AS) about whether to expose the news in public or secretly. Imam Hussein (AS) replied: "There is nothing hidden from my companions." So, they informed the Imam and his companions about the martyrdom of Muslim & Hani. Upon hearing of this news, the Imam replied, Verily we are Allah's and verily unto him shall we return. May Allah's blessings be upon both of them. There is no goodness in life after Muslim."

💠Ayatollah Motahari states:
"The Quran is anchored in reproaching those who are under the yoke of blindly following their ancestors and forefathers and refuse to think so as to set themselves free.
إِنَّا عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِم مُّقْتَدُونَ
'we found our fathers following a creed and we are indeed following in their footstep' (Quran 43:23).
The prophets' communities were very diverse as far as their traditions were concerned.
أَوَلَوْ كَانَ آبَاؤُهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَهْتَدُونَ
'What(!?), Even if their fathers neither applied any reason nor were guided?'" (Quran 2:170)

Verse of the Day
وَ مَنْ يَعْشُ عَنْ ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطاناً فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ
We assign a devil to be the companion of him who turns a blind eye to the remembrance of the All-beneficent.
Zukhruf, verse. 36
——————————————————
علامه طباطبای: و معنای آيه اين است كه: شيطانها اينگونه افراد را كه از ياد خدا خود را به كوری میزنند از ذكر منصرف میكنند، و آن وقت است كه میپندارند به سوی حق راه يافتهاند.
Allamah Tabatabai:
“..And the meaning of this verse is; the devils discourage (misguide and deplete any hope from) those who (as a result of negligence and laziness) blind themselves to the remembrance (and contemplation of God’s majestic manifestations), and at that time they (ironically still) perceive themselves to be progressing toward the Truth (God)”.
📝Note 📝
Devil(s) can refer to: animalistic self and bad companions, celebrities, politicians and musicians who lead towards only worldly matters and lustful desires, or any other powerful force that seeks to derail us off the path to God and perfection
