Abstract Remote sensing is an advanced technique thal can detect hydrocarbons. on land, its advantages include raped and low-cost detection. The detection of hydrocarbons on the surface is essential for environmental monitoring and the purpose of exploration. Knowing the concentration and kind of a spill ts critical for tracking sts spread in the environment, assessing the danger and damages il causes, and proposing remedial methods. For oil and gas companies, locating hydrocarbon spill sites is essential information for the success of future exploring wells This thesis aimed to determine the quantities of hydrocarbons mixed with suil to indicate its accumulation in the subsurface. By identifying several factors. Spill location, Size and extent of the spill, and oil flow direction. Landsw-8 satellite employs thermal imaging channels (10 and 11) to Provide temperature data. Band 10 was used to retrieve the Earth's surface temperature using three different algorithms L.and Surface Temperature (LST) is assessed by Artis and Camahan (1982) model, modifying Stefan- Boltzmann and Kirchoff's Law model and mono-window algorthim. They: ‘were used to determine the extent of the oil spill in the area using spatial interpolation and gradient techniques. Kriging interpolation based on statistical models (i.¢., auto-correlation) 1s applied. Some Geostatistical techniques that produce a forecast surface are applied 10 provide accurate forecasts. In this study. four regions were chosen (i.¢., AL-Basrah, Kirkuk, Kifl, and East Baghdad). The obtained results revealed lots of thermal anomaly sites, each with a different size and effect. The location of the oil spills was determined with high accuracy after identifying the hot spots.
