ظاهرا این قول مشهور که خط عربی در ابتدای اسلام نقطه نداشته است، نادرست است.
مقاله «The Dotting Of A Script And The Dating Of An Era: The Strange Neglect Of PERF 558» در رابطه با پیشینه نقطهگذاری در نسخ قرن اول، در آدرس زیر دست یاب است:
http://www.islamic-awareness.org/History/Islam/Papyri/jones.html
هم چنین در این سایت، چند نسخه دیگر از قرن اول به همراه عکس معرفی شده اند که دارای نقاط یا علائمی برای تمییز حروف صامت اند:
PERF No. 558 - One Of The Earliest Bilingual Papyri From 22 AH / 642 CE.
http://www.islamic-awareness.org/History/Islam/Papyri/PERF558.html
Perhaps one of the earliest and the most famous of all the Arabic papyri, is a part of Archduke Rainer Collection (usually abbreviated as PERF). It shows diacritical dots on the letters ج، خ، ذ، ز، ش and ن, suggesting that dotting was already available for Arabic script in 22 AH.
P. Berol. 15002 - One Of The Earliest Arabic Parchments From 22 AH / 643 CE.
http://www.islamic-awareness.org/History/Islam/Papyri/PBerol.html
It is a parchment fragment of a receipt for the settlement of accounts. This is one of two earliest Arabic papyri. The other one is the celebrated PERF No. 558. Diacritical dots can be seen on the letter ن.
P. Colt. No. 60 - A Bilingual Entagion From The Year 54 AH / 674 CE.
http://www.islamic-awareness.org/History/Islam/Papyri/jerus.html
Dated to 54 AH / 674 CE. An entagion is an announcement of taxes owed by the local community. This entagion was found during excavations at Nessana, 59 kms south of Beer-Sheba. It is a light brown, fine papyrus, written in brown ink. The papyrus was folded up. In the center of the fold an oval - Nile mud seal measures 1.2:0.9 cm. Diacritics appear on ب، ث، ز and ق.

Scott Alexander’s interest in Islam dates back to the early 1980s, when he was both witnessing the events of the Islamist revolution in Iran, and concentrating in comparative religion as an undergraduate at Harvard. After graduating magna cum laude from Harvard, Scott went on to Columbia University in New York where he earned the M.A. and Ph.D. in the history of religions, with a concentration in Islamic studies. From 1986 to 1990, Scott taught courses on Islam and the history of religions at Columbia, Fordham, and Princeton University, and in 1991 he took a position on the religious studies faculty of Indiana University in Bloomington where he taught as an assistant professor of Islamic studies from 1993 to 2000.
Scott is the author of a number of articles on Islamic history and religion and Christian-Muslim Relations published in scholarly journals, edited collections, and encyclopedias such as the Encyclopedia of the Modern Middle East (Macmillan, 1996) and the Encyclopedia of the Qur’an (E.J. Brill, 2001-2005). He has also authored many online blog posts and op-ed essays addressing issues of Islamophobia, and has been featured in a number of videos such as the Knowing and Loving Our Neighbors of Other Faiths series (Work of the People, 2010). His most recent scholarlyresearch focuses on the role of triumphalism in Christian-Muslim Relations and deals with the inherent contradiction between religious claims to universal truth and the religiously motivated desire to impose this truth on others as a means of political and cultural domination.
In addition to sitting on the editorial board of The Journal of Islamic Law and Culture, Scott is a regular consultant on Catholic-Muslim relations for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He also is a member of the advisory boards for the Martin Marty Center for the Advanced Study of Religion at the University of Chicago, the Lake Institute on Faith and Giving at the Indiana University School of Philanthropy, and the Alliance for Shared Values (New York City), the Niagara Foundation (Chicago) and the Antalya Kültürlerarası Diyalog Merkezi (Antalya, Turkey).
Scott lives in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago where he is a member of the parish family of the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle. He is the proud father of Myles “Chitriman” Alexander, a rising professional triathlete, and is married to Karen Lewis Alexander, currently vice president for development at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association.

echanism. The twin-track diplomacy on Syria, where fighting has abated and counterterrorist efforts have made progress, provides a credible formula for conflict resolution elsewhere in the region.
In Yemen, since the first days of hostilities over two years ago, Iran has proposed a four-point plan to end the war, which Saudi Arabia boasted would be over in two weeks. The proposal entails securing an immediate cease-fire, dispatching emergency humanitarian aid, promoting dialogue among Yemeni groups and helping them to establish an inclusive government of national unity with the support of neighbors.
With seven million Yemenis on the brink of a man-made famine and virtually half of Syria’s population displaced, the crises are too urgent to waste time pointing the finger of blame at the parties responsible. Rather, to find a long-overdue end to these calamities, the regional powers must recognize and address the underlying issues that fan violent extremism.
In this vein, the United States and its allies face two choices. They can continue to lend moral and material support, and encourage the perpetrators to intensify their war efforts, though this has proved futile and only brings more death and destruction and further complicates the path to a lasting solution. Or, as Iran has stated from the start, these governments can focus on helping to forge inclusive political solutions with the participation of all the political groups involved.
Back in 1990, when I was a young diplomat, I witnessed how, in the aftermath of Saddam Hussein’s decision to turn against his Arab financiers and invade Kuwait, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies failed to respond to their Iranian counterpart’s offer to explore an inclusive arrangement for regional security. With billions of dollars wasted on arms, and after years of bloodshed, we are back to square one.
If we don’t break this cycle, we will leave only the same momentous task to our children and grandchildren. We must be the generation that learns from history rather than be condemned to repeat it.
Mohammad Javad Zarif is the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
